The start of the 40th birthday blanket

I mentioned before Christmas that my sister is 40 in August and I want to make her a lovely blanket as a gift. I know she really likes the pattern on the front of this book by Susan Pinner:

I have 20 colours and I’m intending to make the blanket 20×20 squares to fit a King size bed… I added six new colours to the palette I bought from Marmalade. I think the purples and jewel colours add depth to the other colours.

This is going to be a big project! By the end I think I’ll have to crochet in her bedroom!! Unusually for me with crafting projects, I have thought about this carefully. I made a note of all the colours, and more importantly, their catalogue number should I need more balls!

I have decided to do all 400 round 1s first, then do all round 2s etc. I intend to take the 20 round 1s of each colour and do round two on each in a different colour (with one the same obviously!); then I shall separate them by the colour of round 2 and do the same with round 3. That way I can make sure that no square is the same. And the only way I can do this is by being SUPER organised!

Before I wielded my crochet hook today Molls & I had a frosty walk…

  2. How exciting to be starting a new blanket – the colours look gorgeous. I’m also using the Patons DK at the moment for a crocheted skirt! If it looks hideous then I too will be using it to make a blanket! Happy New Year!

  3. I’m impressed with your super organisation – and can absolutely understand why it is absolutely necessary! I made a smaller version of something similar a couple of years ago and it was very random – laying the pieces out for the final joining took longer than the original making just trying to keep similar colour combinations separated. I love your colour choices!

  4. wow – this is going to be fantastic! And you, so organized. I am impressed. I think this is making that fab stripy blanket look quite tame. And it makes my sock scrap blanket look very bo-o-o-ring. You have me considering a blanket, which I do not need, but I so love the colors!
